How’d they do it? Thanks to a donation from Partners Health Care, BCYF community center staff wore pedometers all summer. Every day the staff kept count of the miles they traveled, tallied them, and multiplied them by the number of campers. Then they logged them into the Boston Moves website.
The staff and youth really got into the spirit and held healthy competitions among each other and other camps. The centers’ administrative coordinators even competed with each other across the city!
BCYF’s 35 community centers and Recreation Division run over 50 camps and summer day programs that offer a wide variety of activities. There are traditional summer camps offering field trips, arts and crafts, computer time and literacy activities to sports centers which give kids a chance to try out a variety of sports all summer.
We’re already working on how we top that number next summer!
